Speedwell releases iPhone & Android apps and new website for Tourism Events Queensland
Beacons signal new way for visitors to explore Queensland
A landmark digital tourism initiative is guiding visitors to explore Queensland’s destinations as Tourism and Events Queensland rolls out Australia’s largest tourism network of iBeacons across the state.
In Townsville for the Palaszczuk Government’s first Community Cabinet, Minister for Tourism, Major Events and Small Business, Kate Jones, said 150 iBeacons would be installed across Queensland’s 13 tourism destinations at airports, visitor information centres, national parks and other popular tourism attractions.
“Using new location-based technology, the beacons will automatically deliver users of the This is Queensland app with information about the top things to see and do in the area,” Ms Jones said.
“The beacons will also be used at major events, alerting attendees to information about the event and destination.
“It’s technology that will enhance the visitor experience and makes discovering Queensland’s destinations easy and enjoyable.”
Tourism and Events Queensland CEO Leanne Coddington said the app aimed to better connect visitors with their destination and encourage users to share their experiences with family and friends on social media using #thisisqueensland.
“The app and beacons form part of TEQ’s strategy to evolve Queensland tourism’s digital presence using leading-edge technology," Ms Coddington said.
“It follows the launch of the new www.Queensland.com and This is Queensland app in January.”

Speedwell to acquire Big Bridge
Queensland’s largest digital agency Speedwell has acquired digital and AV post production agency, Big Bridge.
The Brisbane based agencies will integrate under the Speedwell brand and premises. Big Bridge’s Gayle Marshall and her core team will join Speedwell to assist in the consolidation of the two businesses.
“The acquisition gives Big Bridge’s clients access to Speedwell’s larger development team and diverse technical offering while providing our existing clients with the broader AV offering” said Speedwell’s CEO Bruce Young.
Speedwell’s speciality in enterprise ecommerce and mobile development for brands such as Dominos, Suncorp Group, Allianz GA & Dreamworld will allow us to deliver great value to Big Bridge’s flagship clients such as Personal Plates Queensland, QUT and CitySmart.
Young said that this strategic acquisition was driven by the increasing use of video online and its importance in delivering end to end integrated digital promotions.
“This is our first acquisition following a long period of organic growth and provides a great opportunity to grow Speedwell’s brand and market share. This is the only acquisition we have pursued, however we are not ruling out further opportunities.”
This acquisition follows a strong 12 months for Speedwell in which they secured Tourism Events Queensland, Brisbane Airport Corporation, Mantra Group and Di Bella Coffee.
