G20 Cultural Celebrations

Speedwell were successful in being appointed by the Queensland Premier’s Department as the digital agency to develop a number of key digital platforms for the 2014 G20 Cultural Celebrations. The festival ran for 21 days in the lead up to Brisbane Hosting the G20 Leaders Summit in November 2014.

This project presented both an outstanding opportunity for Speedwell’s team to showcase their creative and technical skills and talents to the world and a complex set of challenges. Challenges such as producing a site that was rich and engaging showing the festival in its best light while delivering a site that conformed to the Queensland Government’s Consistent User Experience (CUE) standards.  At the same time the site needed to provide for the utmost in security and stability under load in preparation for potential DDOS security attacks from malicious online groups seeking to disrupt the G20.

Speedwell delivered a number of elements and phases to the online presence between August and November 2014 on time and on budget. The key digital engagement platform of the Celebrations was provision of the web system that allowed users to gain access to a limited allocation of 1 minute timeslots and use an online interface to design their own lighting display for Brisbane’s skyline. The users selected buildings, colours and patterns to be illuminated across 15 CBD buildings and could then share an image of their design on social media.

The public flocked to the South Bank precinct in Brisbane to witness the audience generated designs being projected across the city for 5 hours every night creating an experience that will live long in the memory of those who took part.
